How to spend Christmas on a sailboat with your family?

If you are a sailing addict and can’t wait for summer to arrive, Christmas period is a perfect period to spend a different kind of sailing and festive holiday.

A very large number of Croatian charters leave their boats in the sea through the whole winter, especially in Split area (South Dalmatia).

Advantages of Christmas sailing:

  • Boat prices are much lower than in high season period, so you can book a 3 cabin sailboat with heating from 750 € per week!
  • You can charter a boat for a period less than 7 days
  • Winters in South Dalmatia are mild with an average temperature of 12 degrees
  • It can be windy which is a real advantage for sailing enthusiasts

Tips for your Christmas sailing holiday:

  • Plan shorter sails – there are fewer daylight hours in winter period, so it is best for you to reduce your expectations and make shorter sailing trips than you would in summer season
  • Have hot drinks prepared and in easy reach, but keep in mind that coffee is a diuretic, which would not be so practical for you while sailing (better solution would be cacao, hot chocolate, tea, etc.)

  • Keep good food supplies, especially if you would like to prepare a Christmas dinner onboard. Boats have ovens, microwave ovens, so the food previously prepared can be heated

  • Warm clothes, but with more thin layers. Your movement will probably be limited if you wear thick clothes. Instead wear clothes with lots of thin layers. They will trap more air, keeping you warmer and help you move around. A fleece and waterproof jacket and pants would be great!
  • Do not forget sunglasses! The sun is a lot lower in winter days, so you will be squinting a lot if you do not bring your sunglasses with
  • Bring gloves, some good waterproof, thermal once would be great!
